[edit] Brief Overview
Silver Squadron was an Alliance starfighter squadron stationed about The Justice. Captain Saal Avalar was its initial commander. Avalar was soon reassigned to a more urgent mission, which caused Lieutenant Wynn Ward to be promoted to lead the squadron.
Silver Squadron was a mixed-starfighter squadron, with craft ranging from standard Alliance craft (X-Wings, Y-Wings) to experimental new craft (the now more commonplace A-Wing) to Imperial craft (TIE Bomber) to more specialized craft (KDY Firespray-31, Naboo Royal N-1 starfighter).
The members of the squadron also came from varied backgrounds and skill levels. The goal was to have the veterans help with the training of the rookies to create a close-knit synergistic group. By most accounts, the exercise was a failure, although the concept itself is still considered viable by many members of Alliance High Command.
Several members of Silver Squadron gave their lives during the Battle of Derra IV. It was officially disbanded after the battle and the remaining survivors were reassigned to other squadrons.
