Alec Brand
Brief Overview
Captain Alec Brand is the current Captain for the Rebel ship The Bravado. His allegiance to the Rebel Alliance is complete and unquestionable, although his roots would suggest otherwise. Previously an officer of, and now a defector of the Empire's Navy, Alec Brand has spent his life correcting the biggest mistake of the galaxy: the destruction of Alderaan.
Character Background
Alec Brand was born into an aristocratic family on Alderaan. He spent his childhood there, along with his friend Ryce, where they received the finest education and opportunities available. Alec excelled in his studies and did remarkably well in navigating the social arenas that he found himself a part of as a member of Alderaanian nobility.
Ryce pushed Alec toward adventure, while Alec did his best to keep Ryce out of trouble. Together, they complemented each other well.
When the boys reached eighteen years old, their fathers (retired Republic Navy officers) encouraged them to enroll in the Imperial Naval Academy, as both families had a long history in military service. Alec and Ryce soon entered the Academy, hoping to experience more of the galaxy and take part in something bigger and more exciting than the world they were used to.
Alec took to the Academy extremely well and became something of a rising star. He aced both his written examinations and the practical training exercises that he took part in. Unfortunately, Ryce would eventually be expelled six months before graduation, due to some activities he was running on the side. Alec did his best to help his friend and keep him in the Academy, but his efforts were futile. Without his best friend, Alec threw himself even more into his studies, eventually graduating at the top of his class.
His first post was as the captain of a Corellian Corvette charged with escort duty for supply convoys. He made it a point to get to know his crew and worked hard to keep their respect and admiration. He would also serve with the crew, doing his best to learn how the different stations and systems worked in order to understand what those under his command went through on a day to day basis. He would often inspect the ship's systems with the technicians, run wargames with his gunners and pilots, and plot hyperspace courses with his navigators. His ship consistently performed in the top tier of Imperial escort groups, granting him a series of promotions.
He was eventually given a combat post and command of a Carrack-class Cruiser. Along with his strike group, Alec was tasked with eliminating pirate groups operating along the Outer Rim. It was during this tour of duty that Alec received the news that Alderaan had been destroyed. The loss of his homeworld hit him hard, and the word from command was that the Rebels were behind the attack. This troubled Alec, for he knew that the Rebels didn't have the technology, power, or inclination to destroy the pacifistic planet. Only the Empire had that kind of power.
Alec's suspicions were confirmed when he received an encrypted message from Ryce telling him that the Empire was indeed behind the attack. Unsure of his next action, Alec copied as much privileged information onto his datapad as he could and disappeared while he was on medical leave. He met up with Ryce, where they pondered their next move.
Both wanting revenge for the loss of everything they'd grown up with, they decided that the Rebellion was their best option. Alec contacted Rebel operatives, who met with them and brought them to Alliance Command. There, Alec assisted them in decrypting and analyzing the data. They were able to uncover the location where a Nebulon-B Frigate was due to receive routine maintenance and refueling, nearly undefended.
Alec and Ryce took part in the mission to capture the frigate. Afterward, Alec was offered command of the vessel, due to his experience and training as the captain of a capital ship and the relative scarcity of similarly qualified officers in the Rebel Alliance. The frigate, rechristened as "Justice", was tasked with serving as the mobile base of operations for Silver Squadron. Given the rank of Captain, Alec brought in Ryce to serve as his Executive Officer.
Brand lost his right arm during the Battle of Derra IV. He's since been given a cybernetic replacement. After the heroic actions of he and his crew at Derra IV, he was given command of the Bravado and has been granted new mission parameters.
Social Life
Commander Ryce Treldo
Though the majority of his friends and family were destroyed in the blast that vaporized Alderaan, there is one major exception: that of his best friend and XO, Commander Ryce Treldo. Brand's commitment to Treldo, is at best, puzzling. At its worst, it is perhaps Brand's worst character flaw. Often, Alec will take the fall for Treldo's mistakes and pranks, or find unique (and often flimsy) excuses for his antics.
Tera Prax
A starship captain and merchant, Brand has made a business associate and a lover out of Tera Prax.
Venme Hurrlk
Before the academy, Brand had a tryst with Venme Hurrlk, a woman that was just as domineering and physically intimidating as Brand himself.
No one knows about Venme Hurrlk except for Ryce Treldo. It is widely rumored (by Ryce) that Venme arm wrestled for a living.
