Speng Durmel
Brief Overview
Speng Durmel is a bookish, quiet man who grew up on Circarpous V. A self-taught pilot and a jack-of-all-trades, Speng is a quick thinker and planner, but not much of a man of action--until he gets behind the controls of his X-Wing. His mind is sharp, and when he becomes interested in something, he commits himself completely.
Growing Up Speng
His father, a down-and-out man, was his only living relative and his only caregiver during Speng's younger years. Hoping to fashion a better life and a small fortune for his son, Speng's father was tricked into buying a piece of land on Mimban (also known as Circarpous V) that was 'perfect for mining': it turned out to be little more than a marsh.
While his father tried desparately to keep him alive, Speng found himself an escape in the form of the holonet. While libraries were not very popular on the planet, there were lots of workers and marginally wealthy miners who did have datapads and access. After relieving one of his burdensome electronics, Speng would use the device until it was broken, or his father was forced to sell it to feed and house them both.
As a result of his struggled childhood and his early delving into the workforce (as a local banker, amusingly enough) Speng found himself with a pauper's education and a penchant for learning. His first time behind the controls of an X-Wing wasn't until after he joined the Alliance--a suggestion by his father, on his deathbed. Although, this is not entirely accurate: his father wished him to join the Empire.
